Read the application
A bearing designation is only part of the application story. Start by describing the motion, the operating environment and the arrangement in which the bearing will work. A replacement decision should refer to the equipment documentation and the bearing manufacturer’s guidance.
Keep the lubricant clean
Lubricant condition and contamination influence bearing performance. SKF describes how hard particles can damage rolling contact surfaces. Keeping replacement bearings, handling tools and lubricants clean is therefore part of the maintenance discussion, alongside the choice of lubricant itself.
Build a useful record
Keep the bearing designation, lubricant identification and maintenance history together. When a problem recurs, record the operating observations and retain the removed component for examination. That evidence gives a specialist more to work with than a description of noise alone. This is an introductory reading guide, not a lubrication schedule.
