A higher condenser pressure is a useful reason to investigate a water-cooled chiller. A condenser-approach trend adds another view: the temperature difference associated with transferring heat from refrigerant to leaving condenser water.

Use the equipment’s definition

For the water-cooled chiller discussed in YORK’s maintenance guidance, condenser approach is the difference between condensing-refrigerant temperature and leaving condenser-water temperature. Check the installed controller and manual so the logged value uses the intended points and calculation.

Do not confuse this with cooling-tower approach, which describes a different part of the heat-rejection system. Similar terminology can lead teams to compare unrelated temperature differences.

Compare a relevant clean baseline

Carrier’s guidance describes a higher approach relative to the clean condition as an indication of poorer heat transfer, with fouling a likely contributor. It presents the trend as evidence for inspection and cleaning decisions.

Record chiller load, entering and leaving water conditions and relevant flow information. A reading from a different operating point is not a direct repeat of the baseline.

Check before prescribing cleaning

Confirm the measurement points and instrument condition. Review water-side changes and maintenance history. Where the trend remains unexplained, ask the service specialist to compare it with predicted equipment performance and inspect through the approved procedure.

A temperature gap is an indicator, not a photograph of the tube surface. Connect the trend with operating and inspection evidence before deciding what work is needed.

If cleaning is required, use a method approved for the actual tube construction and deposit condition. One mechanical tool or chemical treatment does not suit every exchanger.

Afterward, compare the approach and associated data at equivalent conditions. Keep inspection findings with the trend so the next decision has a traceable basis. The cover shows a water-cooled chiller; its appearance does not establish internal tube condition.
